Class 10 – Ghuna e Kabira

Salaam un alaikum,

I will be summarizing the chapter here shortly.

But I recommend that if you are reading through the ghuna e kabira please write down the ones that you want to discuss below as a comment. Feel free to remain anonymous if you like.

Was salaam,

  1. I think the two important points that we discussed were as below:

    1. Those who are completely dedicated to the way of Allah SWT tend to stand out and so often are a cause of ridicule. We came to this from the Ayaat below:

    {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا كَانُواْ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يَضْحَكُونَ {29
[Shakir 83:29] Surely they who are guilty used to laugh at those who believe.
    {وَإِذَا مَرُّواْ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ {30
[Shakir 83:30] And when they passed by them, they winked at one another.
    {وَإِذَا انقَلَبُواْ إِلَى أَهْلِهِمُ انقَلَبُواْ فَكِهِينَ {31
[Shakir 83:31] And when they returned to their own followers they returned exulting.
    {وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوا إِنَّ هَؤُلَاء لَضَالُّونَ {32
    [Shakir 83:32] And when they saw them, they said: Most surely these are in error;
    {وَمَا أُرْسِلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ حَافِظِينَ {33
[Shakir 83:33] And they were not sent to be keepers over them.
    {فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ {34
    [Shakir 83:34] So today those who believe shall laugh at the unbelievers;
    {عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ يَنظُرُونَ {35
[Shakir 83:35] On thrones, they will look.
    {هَلْ ثُوِّبَ الْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا يَفْعَلُونَ {36
[Shakir 83:36] Surely the disbelievers are rewarded as they did.

We should take consolation from these ayaat as if we are actually on the right path we should take for granted that we will also be ridiculed as well at one point or the other.

An example that could help clarify this point:

A friend is inviting only a select few for his birthday party that he has arranged at the (what are the good hotels / hangouts around? lets say…) The Burj al Arab…

Everyone in class is wondering if they will get invited. You are really keen to see how it is from the inside as well – a lot is heard about the gold plating etc. To your surprise you are… the card reads that it will be held at the bar on the 28th floor…

You reject the invitation! Of course you will be the ridicule of class… they will think you are bonkers, completely nuts!

Or lets make it a little more tempting here! Lets say it was not in the bar, but you knew that girls are also being invited and that there will be plenty of partying… probably like a ballroom atmosphere.

Would you still decide not to go? If you do even the Muslims from your class will feel you are out of your senses!!!

  2. 2. Why is it that we should follow the rules of Islam? Have we not been given enough knowledge to understand life and decide what is useful and harmful?

I think the answer is quite clear cut – little to explain… any questions?

  3. But there was yet another point we made!

    What is a sin?

A simple answer would be that anything that is haram is a sin… but what is haram? What makes an action haram?

Is it like if Allah SWT says it is haram, it is… no reasoning available or possible? or no is there a reasoning behind everything that is made wajib and everything that is made haram????

We, the followers of the AhlulBayt, believe the later… reasoning exists. And it is best explained as:

…things that take us close to Allah SWT are wajib, and those that would become an obstacle in our approach to him are made haram.

Lets discuss examples for these if you like…

  4. Here are the questions you posed in class.

From the sin #26 in our chapter:

    1. How can receiving money from an unjust government be Ghuna e Kabira? May be it needs to be explained before it can be accepted.
    2. Making Statues of animals or human beings… is it only if these are for worship or even otherwise?

    From #37:
    3. the chapter reads: To accuse someone of fault or a defect. We felt that may be we need to add the word falsely before the word accuse.

I thought it would be easy to get details of these sins from the original book this chapter seems to be written from – Greater Sins by Ayatullah Abdul Husayn Dastaghaib Shirazi. The English translation of the book is available on and also on

I noticed that the book has 50 major sins mentioned in some 800 odd pages. Our Madressa Chapter lists 44 major sins. I was trying to reconcile the two and realized that some have been combined like (Murder and Fornication – 5 and 10 in the book have been combined into #5 in our Chapter). Gamblining is #25 in the chapter and #14 in the book.

So what I thought would be quite easy is not really that easy.

I might have to ask someone… let me take advantage of the Ayyam e Muharram and find out iA.

    • Replies to the above questions… does anyone remember them?

Also does anyone remember where this book might be, I had borrowed it from a friend to bring to the class but now it is lost 😦 !

Did I lend it to anyone by any chance?
